Real-Time fMRI

Neural Feedback

Real-time fMRI (rtfMRI) allows us to show participants their own brain activity while they are performing a certain task.  We use this real-time feedback to train them to control their own brain activity.  For example, if a certain area of the brain is not activating enough, resulting in low performance on a certain task, we train the participant to increase brain activity in that region using various mental strategies.  We believe this technique will strengthen areas of the brain that may not be working properly and thus the cognitive skills associated with that brain region will improve.  We are currently conducting research to test this technique.
